What can I expect in a session?
The session is 75 minutes long. The first session begins with an extensive intake. During the initial consultation, we make clear agreements regarding the (initial) number of treatments. Afterwards, I will then complete an abdominal (hara) and back examination to work with pattern identification. Once an action plan has been made, the remainder of the session I will provide applying pressure along the meridians of the body. At the end of the session there is time to reflect about the session itself.
Clients receive shiatsu sessions on Japanese futon. A Japanese futon (布団) is a thin, mat designed to be laid directly on the floor. Shiatsu is performed on a futon because its firm, stable, and flat surface provides the necessary support for therapeutic pressure.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring or wear comfortable clothing you can move around in. Please avoid wearing denim or belts. It is recommended to be able to sit a few minutes after the session before leaving to be able to sit, reflect, and integrate the session .
How often should I receive shiatsu?
This is dependent on the needs and/or complaints of the client. Some people feel their need is addressed after one session. But others may need a few sessions 1x week or 1 every 2 weeks.
How do I prepare for my appointment?
Ideally it would be to make some space in the schedule after the session to be able to take a few minutes to integrate the session. In addition, wearing clothes warm enough or suited best for the temperature outside, so as to prevent from being vulnerable to weather patterns outside when leaving the session.
Is shiatsu covered by insurance?
While shiatsu practitioners can be covered by addition; supplement of many insurance companies. My practice at this moment is not covered by health insurance (expected upon graduation in 2027). If the rate provides a challenge to come to the studio, you can reach out to studioneshoma@gmail.com.
